Misty Hollow Residency

Artist Residency

Misty Hollow is a 25+ acre private artist residency on the Slippery Rock Creek, close to McConnell’s Mill State Park, Moraine State Park, Camp Allegheny, and the Monastery of the Transfiguration. No hunting is permitted on the property. Asia Ward, the lead artist, created Misty Hollow in 2024 as a three year research project for her artistic practice. In 2027 Misty Hollow will transition into an organization. The goal of Misty Hollow is to provide space for artists and other disciplines to engage the land and its resources in a sustainable way by creating ephemeral or artifact driven projects on the property. Misty Hollow provides unique opportunities for the public to experience the land through invite only or event based projects. Misty Hollow is a safe space for marginalized peoples. The property is beautiful, steep and rugged.

Current Artist in Residence

Artist Lindsey Peck Scherloum will engage the public in the making of a collective Monument to interconnection, each person creating a small figure out of clay gathered from earth that surrounds Slippery Rock Creek.  The audience will be prompted to consider their relationship to the Creek, to their community, and to write or think a small prayer for our future, or statement of intention as they create. The figures will be collected and assembled among the springs and running water that feed Slippery Rock Creek at Misty Hollow, eroding over time into the water and the creek and washing into it the meaning each has been imbued by its creator. Lindsey will provide (TBD) event based activities open to the public.

Land Lab

Misty Hollow is a space for experimental land use projects. Artist in Residence projects that consider and employ the property resources sustainably are just one of the many experimental projects. Some of the other projects include: land care and restoration, sustainable off-grid housing, and erosion and drought control.

Misty Hollow is working with Slippery Rock University professors in art, environment, and engineering, The Hoyt Center for Arts and Education, New Castle Public Library, PennOhio Clay Guild, and certified arborist Jen Senchak of Restoreth Roots, LLC. These generous supporters provide programing, educational opportunities, creative consulting, and environmental consulting for the artists in residence and ecocentric projects on the property.

The Land of Misty Hollow

Misty Hollow is a privately owned property of 25+ wooded acres. No hunting is permitted. Access by invite only. At one end of the property is a residence where the lead artist and founder Asia Ward lives with her husband and two cats. Ward and her husband fell in love with the property’s ecosystem and natural beauty and purchased the property with the intent to start an art and science residency. In 2024 Ward began a three year research project, opening the property to art and science projects that would help shape the formal residency planned to launch in 2027.

The landscape of Misty Hollow is a steep three sided hollow with a stream and multiple springs running through it, connecting to the Slippery Rock Creek and its valley. The property has two waterfalls, a glenn, wildflower meadow, views of the valley, and some cliffs. Creatures range from bear and bobcat to salamanders and ring necked snakes.
